Who We Are

Our History

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy (SAGP) was established December 28, 1953 in Rochester, New York (USA) and was initially known as the Presocratic Society. The idea for the Society began with a conversation between George Burch, Constantine Cavernos, and R.K. Sprague at a meeting of the Eastern Division of the American Philosophical Association in 1952.

Our Aim

The objective of the Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy (SAGP) is to encourage and contribute to the scholarly study of Ancient Greek Philosophy, primarily in the analytic tradition, but also in other traditions developed in Europe and other parts of the world. SAGP pursues this aim through its own yearly conferences and through sponsoring panels at meetings with other associations, such as the divisions of the American Philosophical Association (APA), the Society of Classical Studies (SCS), the Society for the Study of Islamic Philosophy and Science, and the International Society for Neoplatonic Studies. By collaborating with these and other associations, SAGP furthers research in Ancient Greek Philosophy, facilitates interactions among international scholars, and highlights the interdisciplinary and intercultural dimensions of our field.

While SAGP endeavors to attract senior scholars to its venues, it is especially proactive in encouraging junior scholars and mid-career scholars to present their work. SAGP is strongly committed to promoting equality and diversity in the field of Ancient Greek Philosophy.
